Book cover design services

(noun) • The craft of blending imagery and typography to capture a story's title, tone and genre in a design made for print. • Also known as book jacket design, book cover creation or book cover layout.

Why you need cover design

Finishing your manuscript is a huge step, but it is only part of bringing a book to life. The cover is where your story first meets its readers. It has to capture attention, set expectations and still feel authentic to what is inside.

Designing a good cover is not about decoration. It is about clarity, mood and fit. The colors, imagery and type all need to work together to create a cover that looks right in its genre and prints beautifully with whichever printer you choose.

We have spent years designing covers that look professional, feel balanced and print reliably across KDP, Ingram and independent presses. Self-published or not, your cover deserves to look as well crafted as the other titles on your bookshelf.

Every cover is different

Some covers start from a single image, others from a loose idea or feeling. Wherever you are in that process, we can take what is in your head and bring it to life on the page. Most cover design projects are typically priced around £300.

Book cover design using existing artwork or a supplied front image

You already have artwork or a front image.

We refine it, extend it across the spine and back, add the typography and place everything into your printer's template so it prints perfectly. We also make any adjustments needed to color, composition and layout so the design feels consistent and professional across the full wrap.

Book cover design developed from a concept or visual style

You have a concept or visual style in mind.

We source or create imagery, adapting photos or producing new visuals digitally to match your idea. Modern tools now make it possible to create unique scenes or characters that once required months of illustration, always under careful direction from our team.

Book cover design starting from a blank page

You're starting from a blank page.

If you do not yet have a concept, we explore tone, composition, color and typography to develop a clear direction that captures attention and fits your genre. For open briefs or projects where several creative directions could work, we can also develop multiple concept versions so you can choose the approach that feels right for your book.

Book cover formats and finishes for paperback, hardback and casebound editions

Different formats and finishes.

Paperback, hardback or dust jacket each needs its own layout and measurements. If you want special finishes such as foil, embossing or spot UV, we advise what is practical with your printer and prepare any extra files required.

How cover design works

Cover design is the craft of creating a complete printed jacket that gives your book its visual identity. Our designers combine imagery, color and typography to shape a front cover that reflects your story, with the spine and back arranged to carry your blurb, author bio, endorsements and barcode in a clear, cohesive layout. Every cover is prepared to your printer's exact template and exported with the correct color settings and ink levels so it prints cleanly and looks fully professional from the very first copy.

Frequently asked questions

Do you design the book or the cover first?

When we handle both, we usually begin with the front cover. It sets the tone for typography and style, which we then carry into the interior so the two feel like a matching package. The full wrap is finalized once typesetting is complete, as the final page count determines the spine width.

What should I put on the back cover?

Think of the back as your book's supporting act. A short blurb of around 150 words is ideal, enough to intrigue without overwhelming. Add a brief author bio in the third person, and if you like, a photo or endorsement. Publisher details can also be included. We arrange all of these so they look clear and inviting, and we generate the barcode from your ISBN or include KDP's white box if required.

Should I print a price on my cover?

By price we mean printing USD $14.99 or GBP £9.99 as text near the barcode. We do not recommend this for self-published books, as retailers set their own prices and exchange rates shift over time. Once a price is printed it fixes those rates against each other, which can make the book look affordable in one country but overpriced in another. However, if you really want to print your RRP, we position it neatly near the barcode so it works with the overall design.

Can I add special finishes like foil or embossing?

That depends on your printer. Most print-on-demand services do not offer premium effects, but if your printer does, we can prepare the extra files required. Tell us what finish you want, whether foil, embossing or spot UV, and where you would like it to appear, and we will make sure it works cleanly with the cover design.

Can my book have spine text?

This depends on the length of your book. IngramSpark allows it from 48 pages, while KDP requires at least 80. Even when it is possible, very slim spines do not always give enough room for lettering to look good. We check your final page count and advise whether spine text is practical, making sure it enhances rather than distracts from the design.

Can you create 3D images of my cover?

Yes. We can produce 3D mock-ups to showcase your book online, ideal for websites, social media or marketing. These are optional extras you can add to any project. Learn more about book promo graphics.

Can I have the source files?

Your project will be delivered as a print-ready PDF. Source files (such as InDesign or Photoshop files) can be provided if required, but they are not straightforward to edit, require specific software, and may rely on licensed fonts and imagery that cannot be included. Changes made without the correct setup can affect layout or print compatibility, so we generally recommend that any updates are handled by us. If you still require your source files, we can package these for £30 per file.

Let's bring your cover to life

Whether you have a clear idea or are still working it out, we can help you turn it into a polished, print-ready jacket that does justice to the book you've written.
