Print-on-demand

The fastest, easiest way to print your book

Print-on-demand means when a copy of your book is sold, it is printed, bound and shipped to fulfil the order. This modern method of printing is a superb option for self-publishers. It completely removes the need for any big upfront investment. There is no need for a large initial print-run or to pay warehousing costs. Instead, each time a book is ordered, it is simply printed and shipped to the buyer — how clever is that!

How it works

A wide range of options

Print-on-demand offers options to suit a wide variety of books. Our blog can provide help on choosing the right inks, paper, binding and trim size for your specific book type. Use our calculator below to estimate your print costs. Please note prices shown do not include shipping, which depends on location.

No upfront costs

There is no print run to store so no warehousing costs. Print costs are only paid each time a copy of the book is ordered. Print cost per copy depends on trim size, binding type, paper type and page count (see calculator for details).

Quality

The print quality of POD is now so good that it can be hard to tell the difference from offset printed books. However, POD is an industrial process with a typical manufacturing tolerance of 0.0625in. This means it is considered commercially acceptable for items to be shifted by up to this amount. Most books are well within this tolerance; those with a bigger shift may be reprinted.

Barcode icon

Barcode

A barcode is required so book retailers can easily scan books. A printer will print one on the back cover and also on last interior page of every book. If the book has no ISBN then we will need to assign a different unique identifier, called a SKU number, to create this barcode.

Proof icon

Proofs

We strongly recommend all customers get a printed proof. Typos and other issues tend to be much easier to spot in print, and color finishes will always look slightly different to the way they appear on screen. For customers on a tight deadline, a proof can be skipped. However, we cannot be held responsible for any issues that would otherwise have been shown up in a proof copy.

Updates

If your book requires an update in the future, a file resubmission fee of $48 USD will apply. The new version of your book is typically available to buy within 5 working days of re-submission.

Turnaround icon

Turnaround

Typically print times are around 5 working days after an order has been placed and paid for. Paperbacks are the fastest, hardbacks the slowest. Express printing options are often available for an additional fee. The print and approval of any proofs must be completed before print orders can be accepted.
