Formatting a book is the process of taking your raw words, lists, headings, pictures, tables, equations and references and transforming them into a professional, polished book manuscript ready for print. It covers all aspects of book typesetting, interior page layout and cover design.

Book Formatting Steps

Microsoft Word is typically the quickest, cheapest, most flexible and efficient tool for formatting manuscripts. InDesign is useful for cover layouts, CMYK colour interior and decorative text flows and LaTeX is occasionally required for highly mathematical texts. Read more about Wordzworth Software.

At Wordzworth we use a combination of Microsoft Word, Adobe InDesign and the LaTeX typesetting system depending on the content of your book. There are a number of steps in the process to producing a professionally formatted book.

Page Layout.  

We set precise margins to best balance the the internal text area with the chosen page size often using using standard templates created for different publishers. We can additionally control the flow of your text by carefully balancing pages.

Book Typesetting.  

We consistently style and typeset your words including font selection, line spacing, indentation, heading design, outline numbering schemes, lists, bullets, pagination, hyphenation and text flow. Read more about Book Typesetting.

Page Numbering.  

Books often require both arabic page numbering as well as roman numerals for the Preface, Acknowledgements, Table of Contents etc.

Table of Contents.  

A large book is likely to be produced as a number of separate files but requires a single table of contents. Using complex TOC layouts this can be achieved perfectly in Word.

Tables.  

Our software will process tables with identical surrounding spacing and styling in each and every case even though they contain different data.

Figures.  

We ensure that all the pictures, which are often supplied in separate files, are placed correctly in the right format. In most books, we use inline graphics for greater placement control and we ensure the original quality of picture is retained whether it was a rasterised or vector graphic.

Captions.  

Captions can be placed above or below tables and figures, usually above a table and below figures and we can also include the chapter number. Fine details include styling or bolding of numbering within caption text e.g. Fig. 2.1 and labelling multiple figure parts a and b.

Equations.  

These require precise layout and numbering as well as consistent fonts, styles and sizes. We are experts with equation formatting software such as Equation Editor, MathType and LaTeX.

References.  

We carefully style inline citations and reference text with either parenthetical or note citation systems. Our formatting engine then significantly extends our capability by allowing both superscripted and square bracketed numbering, e.g. [6, 7]. Covers.  

We produce high quality book covers using InDesign and Photoshop to manipulate a range of stock images and fonts. We ensure full CMYK colour compliance and adhere to cover templates for pre-press layouts.

Design.  

Often fiction books will require a few design effects here and there to keep the reader interested. We simply add the drop caps, fancy fonts, quotation boxes or decorative paragraph separation lines at your request.
